visual indicators

Yesterday I went to fixed my coffee, sat down in front of the computer, and just as I was about to take a sip, (luckily) looked down into the cup to see the first image above. I had used half and half that, upon smelling it, I realized had gone bad. Luckily, I made enough coffee for another cup and had some other half and half in the fridge. It made me think about the power of visual indicators, though, and the importance in both food and product applications. Perhaps a bit of bio-mimicry is appropriate here; how about makeup that turns a different color when it gets too old, or toothbrushes that lose their handle after two months (when its time for a new one?)
