specialization

As someone who is trying to cut down on the 'stuff' in my life, I would normally choose to buy something that is a multi-tasker; one object that can achieve multiple purposes. Last week, though, I finally went ahead and bought a pair of sunglasses (the ones pictured here, actually) specifically for use while running and biking. I've only used them for one run so far, but the benefits are obvious and rewarding; they don't slip around on my face, the color of the lens makes my eyes less strained, and they, well, look legit.

It makes me wonder, though, when it is appropriate to buy (design) a general tool, and when is it really better to so something specialized?
